ELEGYʼs coming-of-age romantic comedy debut novel, The WEEB In Me is 342 exciting pages that read like youthful entries in a travel diary. The novel is filled with the reckless, frantic, manic, surging energy and the purity of the jagged line of youth. Each alternating chapter begins with a short haiku poem to help prepare the reader along the path.
In The WEEB In Me, a Novel By ELEGY, two Cherry-Boy ‘weebsʼ Alex Johnston and Remi Klauser studying abroad in Japan tell their intimate coming-of-age travel stories amid the stunning scenery of rural Japan and the serene and futurisic energy of Kyoto City. It was like being the popular guy in high school everywhere you went in Japan. Even guys that didnʼt look that good were hooking up easily. Except for Alex and Remi.
Alex Johnston is an African-American cherry-boy ‘weebʼ who shares the series of events that leads to his transformational experience while studying abroad in Japan. Heʼs the best at speaking Japanese—but heʼs the worse with females. He details his sensual encounters with three very different girls: Kay, Kurokawa-san, and Chie-chan. He comes close to losing his cherry-boy status—but ruins it for himself each time. And the impact of each failure convinces him to challenge himself and his own identity: he attempts to become Japanese.
Remi Klauser tells his story about learning how to love someone else romantically and unconditionally for the first time. His college years so far had been so cold and dark and lonely that he nearly flunked out—studying Japanese is the only thing that gets him through. But even in Japan heʼs unlucky as ever—until he meets Yoshiko. She pops his cherry and the closer he gets to Yoshiko, and the more deeply he falls in love with her, the more he struggles with allowing himself to love her when they both know that it canʼt last.
Students of the Japanese language can learn from the two main characters, Alex Johnston and Remi Klauser as they journey to Japan for a 1 year study abroad program in rural Shiga, Japan. Students can experience the challenges and difficulties as well as advice on improving their Japanese language proficiency. With the ultimate goal of inspiring students to continue study with the goal of studying abroad in Japan. From the shining coastline of Lake Biwa to the soaring heights of Kiyomizu Temple, to the insides of crazy kobini-marts, crowded Kyoto departo stores and cramped capsule hotels. Japan not only plays a pivotal narrative role, it also provides a beautiful backdrop as the stories gradually and confidently grow along the course of the novel, then building up and crashing in with a climactic tsunami.
